THE RELATIONSHIP OF PARANOIA AND DEPRESSION
Paranoia and depression are closely related states, both clinically and theoretically. It has been my experience clinically that paranoid patients can only relinquish their paranoid stance at the risk of encountering a severe depression. Part of the therapeutic difficulty in treating such patients is that one must help them to face their underlying depression and help them to bear it. Consequently, our thinking about the genesis of paranoia must take into account the relation between paranoid conditions and an underlying depressive stratum in the patient's personality structure.
