Mother's Psychosis 母亲的精神病 It is of considerable interest in the context of Ellen's recurrent decompensations to note what was happening to her mother. Soon after Ellen's first psychotic episode, while she was still in the hospital, her mother became psychotically depressed and also had to be admitted to the hospital. She felt responsible for Ellen's illness and blamed herself for what had happened to her. She responded quickly, however, to ECT and remained in the hospital for only a week. Again when her husband died, she became severely depressed and suicidal, wishing that she could die like her husband and be with him. Since that time, she had been more or less chronically depressed and had been treated countless times with ECT. In addition, soon after her husband's heart attack she began to suffer from cardiac symptoms. She developed pains in her chest and became obsessed with the fact that she might have heart disease. In fact in subsequent years she developed anginal pain on a physiological basis and suffered several heart attacks. She played the cardiac cripple to the hilt, however, and used her condition against Ellen in a rather sadistic and highly guilt-provoking manner. It seemed, then, that for both mother and daughter, the death of the father plunged them into chronic states of mental impairment.
