Chapter 11 FRED F.
The present case is of considerable interest not only for the pattern of psychopathology that it presents, but also for the questions that it raises in a broader context. Because of the patient's life situation and involvements, his experience raises in a particularly forceful way the problem of the relationship between individual, intrapsychic pathology and the disruption of social processes and the distortion of social organization. The basic question to which we will have to address ourselves in approaching this particular case is: to what extent are the projective aspects of individual psychopathology verifiable or verified in the social structures and processes which provide the reality to which the projection is directed? It can be readily seen—and can be seen more at length in the following case material—that this consideration raises some perplexing and difficult questions regarding the sense of isolation and social alienation that many of our young people feel today.
