Incestuous Symbiosis 乱伦共生 These currents came to a focus in the incest episode. On both sides of the relationship there was a regressive dissolution of ego boundaries and a flooding of instinctual material. The incestuous involvement answered to and derived from intense and highly ambivalent instinctual needs on the part of both mother and son. I would be persuaded that in the present case the incest was a manifestation of psychotic regression on both parts. It was in a sense a genital reaffirmation of the symbiotic union—with all of its intense longings for closeness, dependency, union—as well as with all of its intense murderousness, destructiveness, sadism, and fears of engulfment. The pathological symbiosis made it impossible for him to achieve any meaningful separation from his mother, so that any attempts to move in the direction of greater separateness or autonomy were met by her murderous and sadistic attacks. Built into these attacks was a blaming process that held him to be responsible in some sense for her own sense of inner frustration and emptiness. His sense of separateness and autonomy was jeopardized therefore externally. It was also jeopardized internally. The introjective process which derived from his need to cling to her as the symbiotic object and to preserve the slender and ambivalent ties to her resulted in the internalization of a highly pathogenic and destructive introject. The aggressive components that were derived from his mother's own murderous destructiveness and from his own internal murderous aggressiveness were amalgamated and fused in the inner introjects.
