But mother was also—as was his father—a victim. The introjective process internalized that aspect of her pathology as well, so that Fred became in part a reflection of her own helpless and victimized self. These elements are recognizable in Fred's perceptions of and interactions with women. He saw them in part as powerful, destructive, controlling and castrating agents; to involve oneself with them was to be victimized and controlled, to have to submit to their demands and be ruled by their whims—sexual and otherwise. But at the same time he saw them as defective, damaged, weak, and helplessly victimized creatures. On this side of his projections, he felt himself to be a monster who hurt and damaged the women who became closely involved with him. These elements were readily available for projective elaboration. These severely pathogenic introjects were likewise the basis for his sense of inner evil and worthlessness. Their fragility and fragmented propensity for regression left him with an impaired and fragmented sense of autonomy. From one point of view, the introjection of these respective parental imagos had its implications for the organization of Fred's perception of himself and for the functioning of his personality. The structure of his rather fragmented self was organized around the respective introjects of both father and mother. We have pointed out the aspect of victimization which derived from both parents. There was also the aspect of destructive omnipotence. Both these elements were combined in Fred's inner psychic economy and structure and provided a focus for his pathology. Equally important, however, was the dimension of blaming and the shifting of responsibility that was evident in both parents. Each parent in subtle and not so subtle ways implicitly blamed Fred for a part of their own unhappiness and frustration. He became the victim, through blaming, of their respective inadequacy and failure. But in addition, the interaction between his father and mother was based on mutual blaming and accusation. Their relationship was mutually undercutting and destructive, and the predominant style of this mutually devastating interaction was one of blame and assignment of responsibility. Besides the dimensions of structural defect involved in the introjections of these pathological elements, there was built into Fred's functioning personality a style of defensiveness, a style which was based in part on the patterns of action and expression derived from these introjects, but also based in part on the assimilation and internalization of the patterns of interaction that constituted the family relationships.
