A consistent feature of his clinical picture was the phobic elements in his pathology. These were frequently a problem for him, breaking out from time to time in a burst of phobic activity. By and large, however, he defended himself against these fears by a vigorously counterphobic attitude. He would complain that he was still haunted by the fears of his childhood, and would angrily deride himself for having these infantile fears. He insisted that he should be able to put them out of his mind and conduct his affairs in a more reasonable and adult manner. These phobic aspects of his personality also played a prominent role in his dream life. He would frequently have frightening and dreadful dreams in which people were beaten, burned, cut, and killed. These dreams would be populated with horrible monsters, and he would often awaken from them in a fit of terror. On occasion he would awaken screaming. These episodes were frightening to him, and he would fret that he was losing his mind and becoming crazy again. Occasionally he would dream of losing his mind and being put back into the hospital, with the fear that he would have to stay there for the rest of his life. His dreams were sometimes a reflection of his waking concerns. One very striking instance of this was a dream he had in which he was a seal. He was caught on a beach where seal hunters were hitting the helpless seals over the head with heavy clubs, killing them and cutting them up with knives. The beach was covered with blood, and the air was rent with the terrified cries of helpless seals. He wanted to escape. He dove into the water and plunged deep to the bottom of the ocean and had to swim through a long dark tunnel. When he emerged he came upon a beach where there were no hunters. But there was a female seal there, and he began doing a "fire dance" which he described as a sort of mating dance. The dream expresses his usual feelings of helpless victimization, as a helpless seal subject to ruthless murder at the hands of the powerful hunters. He escapes into the protection of the female element—the darkness of the water's depths—and finds safety and consolation in the company of a female seal. The additional point of interest to this dream was the fact that it was dreamed during the period in which the trial of Bobby Seale—the militant Black Panther leader—was being featured in the headlines. This suggests Fred's further identification with the rebellious and disadvantaged groups, and that he saw himself in terms in which he envisioned Bobby Seale, as the helpless victim of the repressive and authoritarian elements of society. Fred felt strongly that Seale's trial was merely a thinly disguised attempt on the part of the authorities to "get" Seale. Seale's subsequent acquittal was a source of great glee for Fred. Beside the severely disturbing anxiety dreams that Fred described, he also described a recurrent dream experience that was very frightening and distressing for him. He recalled having had severe nightmares for as long as he could remember. But even more disturbing than these dreadful and terrifying nightmares was the recurrent experience he had, an experience that tended to recur at times when he was particularly upset about something or particularly angry. He described a feeling of pressure on his chest that made it difficult for him to breathe. It was as though there were a heavy weight resting on his chest. It was a great weight crushing down on him and pressing the life out of him. He felt helpless and terribly frightened in these dreams. He described feeling totally paralyzed, unable to move or to get out from under the great crushing weight. The affect associated with this material was always one of terror and utter helplessness.
