Rage at Parents 对父母的愤怒 These antisocial and revolutionary tirades were mingled with and alternated with his expressions of outrage and disappointment with his parents. His complaints were many, but the basic resentment was that they had treated him with such cold indifference, had callously abandoned and rejected him, victimized him without any concern for his wishes or needs, and had thus ruined his life. One of the important focuses of this rage had to do with money. Money was a chronic source of irritation and conflict between Fred and his parents. The lack of money had always been the excuse for not being able to do so many things, being unable to come home for visits, for the parents not being able to come visit him, for not being able to take him along with them on their foreign trips, for father's having to take the sort of positions that he did, etc. Money had also been a chronic focus of concern for Fred's father. He was always reminding the family of the scarcity of money and of the need to economize. For Fred this concern focused around his school expenses. We discussed his feelings about the money problem, particularly his rage at his father over it. In addition the father began to raise complaints over the length of Fred's hospital stay. He objected that it was costing too much and that Fred should do what he could to shorten it. Side by side with expressions of concern and sympathy for Fred's plight, the father would write letters chiding him for still being in the hospital and still costing money. Every communication would trigger an angry outburst from Fred. It was difficult for Fred to acknowledge his anger over this issue, and it took some months before he was able to talk about it. I took up with him his father's complaints in detail. Gradually it became clear to Fred that the claims could not reflect the situation as the father presented it. His family was well off, lived in an expensive suburban area, was educating three sons, was able to take fairly expensive vacations each year, etc. Two points were crucial. One was that his father—in the midst of his complaints to Fred about spending too much money on hospitalization—bought a sailboat for several thousand dollars. The other factor of importance was that he began to realize the amount of money that was consumed by his mother's drinking. The sailboat brought into focus his father's irresponsibility and Fred's anger over it.
