Mother's Depression
When Gloria was seven years old, one of the critical events occurred that was significantly related to her illness. Her mother became pregnant with her youngest sister Glenda. As the pregnancy progressed, Mrs.G. became increasingly depressed. After the delivery she suffered a severe postpartum depression. The family was devastated. Mrs.G. had to be hospitalized, received shock treatments, and remained in the hospital for several months. The new baby had to be put out in a foster home for about a fourteen-month period. After her return home, Mrs.G. remained severely depressed and lethargic. She was unable to do anything, unable to care for the children, was extremely irritable and short-tempered.
The effect on Gloria was devastating. She could not understand her mother's illness. Her basic feeling was that her mother didn't love her. Her resentment and rage in response to that basic feeling brought with it intense feelings of guilt and worthlessness. When her mother became ill and went away to the hospital, Gloria felt terribly guilty and somehow responsible for the trouble. She recalled how desperately lonely and abandoned she felt at that time. She did not know what her mother's illness and absence meant. She was terrified that her mother might die.
When her mother finally returned, things were worse for Gloria than ever. Her mother spent most of her time moaning and crying and saying that she wished she were dead. She was quite irritable and impatient. Gloria seemed unable to do anything right. Even the slightest noise or disturbance or disobedience would set her mother off. Her father did not help matters for her very much. His anxiety and distress over his wife's illness were difficult for him to handle as well.
The picture that emerged from these early years was that of a sensitive, easily affected, delicate, shy, timorous, withdrawn, and terribly phobic and insecure little girl. Her experience was overburdened with feelings of shame and guilt. She burdened herself with feelings of evilness and felt herself to be the cause of the evil to those around her. She was caught up in extremely ambivalent relationships with the important figures in her life. It is difficult to find any figure with whom she was able to establish any sort of positive and rewarding and meaningful relationship. As she advanced into adolescence, her sexual conflicts became more intense. Her relationship to Peter was unstable and immature, based more on mutual weaknesses and immmaturities than on any strengths. By the time she got to college she was suffering from a full-blown paranoid psychosis, marked by ideas of reference, persecutory anxieties, suspiciousness, multiple projections, severe phobias, and hypochondriacal concerns, and from time to time with suicidal ideas. These symptoms and the severe dysphoric affects that accompanied them grew worse as time went on. The break with Peter turned the process from a progressively chronic one to a more acute process of decompensation. Gradually the paranoid process came to include the members of her family, to the accompaniment of increasing tension and conflict at home. Thus she found her way to our hospital.
