Depressive Aspect
It seems clear from the clinical material that we have presented that Henry's case is predominated more by depressive elements than by paranoid ones. The depressive reactions stand forth in center stage, while the paranoia forms a slender subplot that weaves more or less subtly through the acts of the drama. We have seen this delicate interplay and interweaving of depressive and paranoid themes in all of our patients, in each case striking a different balance and a different proportion. The ratio of paranoia and depression is an unstable one and shifts from time to time and from stage to stage of the patient's illness. The shifts can also be detected and followed through the course of the patient's therapy.
