Sally returned only to find things more chaotic and difficult than ever. She quickly decided that she could not take any more of it. She told Henry that she did not love him anymore, that she could not continue to live under these conditions, and that she was going to divorce him. She left and returned to her family. After this Henry collapsed completely. He became severely depressed and suicidal, and had to be hospitalized. He reconstituted quickly and remained in the hospital only a month. He had to drop out of school. However, Sally went ahead with the divorce. Henry decided to stay where he was and get a job. He worked for a time, intending to return to school when he felt able to do so. He was bitter and resentful about his relationship to Sally and about the divorce. He blamed her fully for what had happened. It was not long after these events that he met Edna. She was a schoolteacher. She had been twice married previously and twice divorced. In his typical style, Henry was feeling lonely, abandoned, and lost after his wife had divorced him. He turned to Edna with long-frustrated needs for affection and warmth. Edna responded amply. They quickly developed an intense and highly sexual relationship. Henry recalled this whole episode with a sense of wonder. He recalled, "I never knew that there were so many ways of doing sex. She really knew her way around!" He wondered whether Edna was really a nymphomaniac; they spent nearly all their time together in bed. He finally decided to move in with Edna and they lived together for about six months. As he became increasingly involved with her, his yearnings for a close and enduring relationship grew. He decided that he wanted to marry Edna. When he announced this intention to the family, there was an expectable explosion. The family was violently opposed to marrying a woman who had been twice divorced. They regarded her as a prostitute. His Uncle Clem and Aunt Mary were adamant. He could choose between Edna and them. If he chose Edna they would cut off any support financially and wanted to have nothing to do with him ever again in the future. Henry's rage was boundless. Once again his family had interfered in his life. Once again he had been made a helpless victim. They had tried to run his life ever since his mother died, and now they were doing it again. He became suicidal. He ran out and got a bottle of sleeping pills. Edna was frightened and called his doctor. When they reached him he had swallowed the pills and was comatose. He was felt to be psychotic at that point and was hospitalized again—this time for nearly a year. Henry recalled with particular bitterness that when it was decided to hospitalize him his father came and talked to the doctor. His father told the doctor. "This boy has had the best of everything!" He felt deeply resentful about his father's attitude. "I can't understand how they could be such pricks and bastards!" Henry exclaimed. He felt that his father and his family had never really cared anything about him. There is little doubt that this was a severe regressive episode. There were no hallucinations or frank delusions, but his recollections and impressions were confused and disorganized. He was deeply depressed. The conditions at the hospital—a state institution in the Midwest—appalled and frightened him. He saw how unhappy other patients in the hospital were and how their lives were ruined. He feared that he would fall completely apart and end up a vegetable like so many others. He felt absolutely abandoned and alone. There was no one to whom he could turn. He felt that his father and his family had completely turned against him and abandoned him. Gradually his condition improved and his depression receded. When he was finally released from the hospital he had nowhere to go; there was nowhere that he felt he belonged. He stayed in that area for a while. He got a job and was able to support himself. But he felt isolated, he felt that he wasn't making it. He had difficulty making friends and finding a place for himself. He finally got the idea that he needed to get to another place, make a new life for himself, get a new job, and, above all, find some woman to whom he could get close, with whom he could have a warm and lasting relationship, whom he could love and who would love and take care of him. Thus he decided to come to Boston.
