Harry 哈里 The other brother was Harry. Harry was a good seven years older than Jim, and in many ways was one of the most important figures in Jim's life, second only to his parents. Harry was the family genius. His scholastic performance was consistently brilliant. He provided a radical contrast to Joe whose interests were decidedly nonacademic. Harry was an intense and dedicated student. He poured his energies into schoolwork, to the detriment of all other interests. He had few friends and dated very little. The picture that emerges from Jimmy's accounts of him is that of a serious, withdrawn, angry, contemptuous, severely obsessional and highly intellectualized and moralistic adolescent. Jimmy's relationship with Harry over the years was extremely difficult and highly ambivalent. In a way he also idolized Harry and greatly admired his intelligence and accomplishments. Harry set an incomparable standard for him. Jimmy wanted to emulate his brother and gain some of the recognition and acceptance he felt Harry received for himself. He also felt that it was an impossible task, that he never could match or even approach his brother's standards of performance. He also strove to be with his brother and gain a closer and friendlier relationship with him. This too seemed impossible. Harry did not seem to want to have much to do with his baby brother. In childhood games, Harry would play tricks on him so that Jimmy would be made to look or feel foolish or stupid. Sometimes Harry and his friends would trick Jimmy and run away, leaving him alone. Harry went away to college. When he would come home, his arrival was awaited with great pleasure and anticipation by little Jimmy. He would look forward to Harry's homecoming and think about the exciting things that they could do together. Jimmy was usually disappointed. Harry would always have other things to do and never seemed to have much time for Jimmy. Jimmy's greatest delight was when he could get his brother to teach him something. At times he would try to get Harry to help him with his school assignments, but usually any help was accompanied by severe criticisms and comments that left Jimmy feeling that he was just too stupid and incapable of ever doing anything. Jimmy recalled, for example, that he showed Harry his Bar Mitzvah speech—one he had written himself—and asked Harry for help in improving it. Harry tore up the speech and wrote another, saying that Jimmy's effort was worthless and stupid. Harry was often hypercritical and sarcastic, and Jimmy felt this as a severe rebuff and rejection. We shall see that there was built into this relationship an intense sibling rivalry.
