If we bring into focus at this point the introjective configuration that is identifiable in Karen's intrapsychic world, we can begin to see that it offers certain specific resemblances to the introjective pattern that we have become familiar with in the study of the paranoid process. To put it in terms of the Oedipal configuration, we can think in terms of the positive and the negative Oedipal situations. For Karen, it is the positive Oedipal relationship which lies closest to the surface. In these terms, she adores and idealizes her father, and hates and reviles and struggles against her mother. In these terms, she identifies with the strong aggressive controlling aspect of her father and tries to set a distance between her and mother.

But it is not this aspect of her intrapsychic economy which lies at the root of the difficulty. At a deeper level there is the negative Oedipal complex. At this level, Karen yearns for and constantly seeks approval and acceptance and closeness with her mother, while she rejects her father's authoritarian control and feels contempt for his pathetic insecurity and weakness. It is in these terms that Karen identifies with the vulnerable and victimized woman-mother and internalizes her mother's critical, accusatory, and punitive attitudes. This is also the source of her contempt for male inadequacy and dependency and her contemptuous hostility for the "puppydog."

What is impressive here—although by no means new—is the fact that the Oedipal involvement itself is less meaningful than the introjective prehistory which provides the substance out of which the Oedipal configuration is evolved. It is the patterning of these introjects, developed through the preoedipal developmental history and carrying with them pregenital determinants—in this case, and in many of the cases of paranoid manifestations, specifically the anal determinants—that gives shape to and determines the quality and the emphasis within the Oedipal configurations.

Part of the problem in dealing with Karen's pathology is that there is a certain splitting between these introjective organizations with a resulting alternation between one configuration and another. The splitting and the sequential emphasis and adoption of introjective positions serves rather intense defensive needs. Thus, for Karen, the adoption of the strong, controlling, coping, aggressive, mastering position, which reflects so directly her introjection of the more adequate aspects of her father's personality, serves as an important and indeed essential defense against the sense of weakness and vulnerability and victimized martyrhood which is involved in the maternal introject. Conversely, the adoption of the alternative position, that of susceptible, vulnerable and dependent female, serves important defensive needs in avoiding and protecting Karen from the intensity of destructive and hostile impulses involved in the introjection of the aggressor.

It is important to note there that the alternative introjective positions cannot simply be identified on any one-to-one basis with the respective parental figures. Rather, the complex introjective alignment is a result of the interplay and the interaction of introjective elements derived from both parents. Consequently, if we were to denominate one aspect of Karen's introjective economy in terms of identification with the aggressor, we would have to make reference to introjective elements derived from both parental figures involving, for example, father's authoritarian and mysteriously destructive aspects, as well as mother's punitive and harsh accusatory superego stance. Alternatively, if we focus on the victimized aspect of Karen's introjective alignment, we would similarly have to make reference not only to the pose of victimized and martyred femininity represented by the figure of the mother, but would also have to add to that the sense of inadequacy and vulnerability and pathetic susceptibility which Karen unquestionably could detect under her father's bluster and military facade, and which became quite apparent after his retirement from the Army and the onset of insecurities in connection with his job and the erosions of time and age.
