Projective Elements 投射元素 Another important dimension that we need to remind ourselves of in reference to the introjective vicissitudes is that these provide the fundament and the substance on the basis of which projective mechanisms function. In her pathological alternation between these introjective components, Karen inevitably would repress the alternate aspect of the introjective alignment. The repressed aspect of the introjective organization would become the substance of the projection. Consequently, when the introjective alignment was dominated by the aspects of victimization, the aggressive components were projected into the external objects. Thus, within the analysis, her defensively derived need to counterattack and to undermine my methodology and challenge my analytic competence ran the risk of hurting and defeating me. It was this aspect of her projective effort which made me into a potential "puppydog" and which consequently cast upon her the burden of destructiveness and hurtfulness. The alternatives were clearly structured and stated: if a man was not relating to her as an insensitive brute, if he showed any weakness or insecurity or even loving dependence on her, this served only to elicit her contempt and her aggressive wish to put him down and treat him as a "puppydog." This too found its larger ramification and rationalization onthe broad canvas of the outer world. She decried the social processes and mechanisms by which men were required to remain their mother's little boys, and thus became inadequate and too weak and insecure to deal with a strong-minded, intelligent, and professional woman such as herself. Thus, for Karen men were seen dichotomously as either strong, powerful, destructive, callous, insensitive brutes who victimized and took advantage of women, demeaning and subjugating them sexually and socially and intellectually; or they were weak, insecure, inadequate, impotent, and pathetically vulnerable creatures who could be destroyed by any woman who did not place herself in a demeaned, nonthreatening, and subjugated role. One of the very central and important aspects of the analytic process was the definition and testing out and working through of these introjective-projective complexes and a gradual erosion of the dichotomous logic which dictated that the universe had to be divided between these extreme polarities. The logic, of course, was derived from and expressed the dichotomized organization of Karen's internal world.
