The place, of course, where these underlying feelings of vulnerability came to their most vivid focus and expression was in the analytic relationship. Karen saw the analytic situation as a trap, just as she saw any acceptance on her part of the analytic process or of my interpretation as submitting herself and making herself helpless and impotent. The threat of seeing me as omnipotent and controlling and herself as helpless and vulnerable, was exceedingly powerful, and she struggled violently against it, refusing to see herself as helpless or to see me as omnipotent. Yet there was a part of her that worked to bring out the bastard in me, so that the analytic encounter became a process of scoring points—she against me, and me against her.
The analytic relationship was essentially a power struggle, and she assumed I would use against her what I knew about her—that analysis, like life, was nothing but a scorecard. She felt I was judging her, judging that she was weak and evil and wrong. On the couch she felt as though she were on a dissecting table, and she felt terribly weak, and exposed, and vulnerable. She related this to the experience of a pelvic examination, where she felt humiliated and reduced to being just another body, just another block of meat. She played artfully on the work shrink, someone who reduces patients to a least common denominator, to the basest emotions, and eliminated any individuality or value in them. She referred to her fear that if she gave an inch in the analysis, she would be nailed to the wall. She called it a "doomsday machine in my head, a sense of terrible vulnerability."
