Pathological Introjection 病态内摄 The pathological introjection can have severe effects on the child's development. The positive and constructive ego-identifications require a context of loving admiration for the object of the identification—as well as the welcoming on the part of the parental object of the child's expressed wish to become like the parent. If this context does not obtain and persist, the process of psychic development comes to depend more on introjective mechanisms which more globally incorporate the parental images—including negative and destructive aspects—in the service of defense against the anxiety and ambivalence in the relationship(Meissner,1971b). Thus the mother's low self-esteem and fear of loving relatedness frustrates the child's admiring wish to identify and forces the child to resort to more defensive introjections. The introjection can be crippling for the child.
