Role of Parents 父母的角色 Ann was capable of recognizing and expressing some of her intense hatred for her mother. She rejected and reviled everything that her mother stood for. She struggled to make herself everything that the mother was not. Where mother was loud, pushy, aggressive, domineering, and intrusive, Ann strove to make herself quiet, unobtrusive, passive, inhibited, withdrawn. Her adopting this inept and passive position also served the important function of hiding and masking her murderous impulses—particularly against her mother. At the same time, Ann had accepted and in fact embodied her mother's critical and devalued perception of her. The father remained distant and relatively uninvolved. Whatever contacts there were found him to be quite guarded and distant. He was suspicious of hospitals and psychiatrists, and did not trust their motives. He was constantly busy intellectualizing about Ann's difficulties in a superficial way. He made it abundantly clear that he felt threatened by psychiatrists. He needed to absolve himself of any part of Ann's illness and responded to questions quite defensively, as though they were accusations of inadequacy on his part or of some responsibility of his own for her illness. She would constantly write letters to involved hospital personnel, would make frequent telephone calls to doctors and social workers involved in the case, was continually making complaints about not being included in the treatment, about not knowing what was going on. This activity was quite undermining and threatening for Ann. It made the mother a constant threat to her treatment and a constant preoccupation. Ann could never quite reassure herself that the doctors were not in collusion with her mother. She repeatedly and endlessly questioned whether what she might say in therapy would be repeated to her mother. She repeatedly would ask whether any comment or suggestion of the therapist, or any administrative change, had been instigated by her mother. Paranoid attitudes and projections played a prominent role in both parents. The father was guarded, suspicious, and engaged in frequent displacement of responsibility, particularly in his eagerness to cast blame on his wife. His attitude to Ann was seductively supportive and caring, but was clouded by his need to ally himself with her against his wife. Ann's mother was clearly the primary persecutor who was continually controlling, intruding, and pressuring Ann to submit to her demands and expectations.
