Bob's early childhood was filled with phobic concerns and anxieties. He was constantly afraid of werewolves and goblins. He often had dreams in which werewolves and goblins of various types would attack him. When his father came home at night, he used to park the car in a garage and walk to the house along a dark, narrow sidewalk. After dinner it was Bob's job to empty the garbage. To do this he had to carry it out along this same dark sidewalk. He was constantly terrified that he would be attacked and killed by werewolves. This was transparently a displacement of his fear of his aggressive and feared father. Moreover, on one occasion, Bob was accosted on the bus by an older man, a derelict. Badly frightened by this experience, he was able to tell the school principal about it in his panic but was afraid to tell his parents—particularly out of fear of his father. These fears stayed with him over the years—on several occasions he reported nightmares of being attacked by werewolves. The similarity to Freud's famous case of the "Wolf-Man" springs readily to mind. In that case, as well, the homosexual longing for the father and the fear of castration were felt by Freud to play a central role in the generation of the child's anxiety. In Bob's case, his fears of his father—generated undoubtedly at an Oedipal level—were displaced into fearful imaginings and dreams of werewolves and into a fear of "dirty old men" who would accost him, presumably for homosexual purposes. The fears reflected Bob's inner concerns about his own passivity and vulnerability. They also mirrored the inner world of primitive and destructive objects that haunted his dreams and were projected into dark corners and alleyways.
