Relation to Parents 与父母的关系 The situation in the family interaction had severe implications for Clare's involvement in and resolution of her Oedipal relationships. Her preoedipal one-to-one relationships with both parents were disturbed and imbalanced, so that her involvement in the Oedipal situation was impaired from the beginning. The mother's aloofness and distance made it difficult for Clare to establish any warm and loving relation to her. Clare was left with an intense longing for closeness with her mother that was continually frustrated. The intensity of those homosexual longings was worrisome to Clare and frightened her, but they seemed to stem from the deep infantile longing for closeness with her mother that reflected the mother's relative unavailability at an earlier preoedipal level. At the same time Clare's wishes to do away with her mother as an Oedipal rival were complicated by the mother's depressive withdrawals. These left Clare with a sense of responsibility for her mother's hurt and increased her own sense of magical power—especially the power to hurt and control the feelings of others. The Oedipal wish to love him and be loved by him was complicated by his open seductiveness, which served to excite her sexual wishes to the point where they became threatening to her and highly conflicted. She felt shamed and guilty over the wishes stirred in her by his exposure to her—particularly her fascination with his penis. But this was all complicated again by his vicious and demeaning treatment of her. She hated and feared him at the same time. This aspect of her relationship with him was heavily overladen with pregenital elements.
