Homosexuality 同性恋 It might be well to add a comment here about the question of homosexuality in relation to Don's pathology. Homosexuality was never an explicit problem, nor was it ever a focus of concern in psychotherapy. Don had never experienced homosexual wishes of any significant intensity and he had never had any homosexual experiences. He explicitly felt anxiety about his ability to relate to women—and particularly about his ability to satisfy them sexually. We can postulate a defensive element in this against underlying homosexual fears and doubts. But this anxiety was not cast in terms of homosexuality as such. The issue was much more in the line of what Ovesey (1954, 1955a, 1955b) has described in terms of pseudohomosexual conflicts. His concerns over his ability to "make it" with girls were much more in the line of proving to himself and his family—but primarily to himself—that he could function adequately in the business of being an independent and capable adult. The issue of independence and autonomous functioning, then, was compounded with homosexual anxiety, but not expressed explicitly as such a conflict. Both aspects of this complex conflict were rooted in his feminine identification, based on the introjection of the maternal image.
