The circumstances of Don's life changed radically after his mother's death. Things were unhappy for him at home. He could not get along with his authoritarian father, and there was little by way of positive affection that passed between them. If his father was not depressed and withdrawn, he was making demands on Don and setting restrictions against which Don felt he had to rebel and struggle. Don's relationship with his older sister also became considerably more difficult. She was a very domineering person and felt it her responsibility to take over where her mother had left off. She was much more of one mind with her father—very conservative and constricted in her approach—and felt that her mother had babied and catered to Don too much. She set about to rectify this deficiency in his upbringing. Don, in turn, was bitter, resentful, and hated and despised his sister, bitterly resenting her attempts to control and interfere in his life. There was a constant battle between them. Don had lost the protective haven that his mother had provided. Soon after, however, the sister had married and moved out of the house. After the sister moved out, that left Don as the last of the children in the house. Despite their poor relationship, Don's father depended on him to a considerable degree. The father wanted to keep Don at home—out of motives of selfishness and dependence, it seems. The issue was particularly joined over the question of where Don should go to college. The father and sister insisted that he stay at home and attend a local institution that enjoyed a very good academic reputation. Don, however, cherished an ambition to attend a more prestigious institution away from home. It was also his ticket to freedom. The argument raged intensely, but Don's argument and objections did not put much of a dent in his father's resolve. Then, too, Don could not quite master his own ambivalence. He wanted to leave his family—particularly his father. They did not get along and he hated the old man, particularly for the way he had treated Don's mother and all the misery he had caused her—as Don saw it. Part of him wanted nothing better than to get away from his father and his family—to get out from under their thumbs. But at the same time he felt guilty about these feelings and for the rage and hatred he felt toward his father. Moreover, he worried about his own capacity to function and be independent away from home. He had always lived at home—he had always been extremely dependent and protected especially by his mother. His ambivalence and his uncertainty kept him from making a break at that point, and he capitulated to their wishes. He stayed at home and went to the local school for two years. By that time he had had enough. He overcame his ambivalence and worked up enough courage to confront his father's wishes and to make the break from home. His father gave in, but not without prognostications of Don's failure. His father predicted that he would not be able to make his own way away from home, and that he would not be able to meet the high academic standards of the school to which he wished to transfer. Thus, when Don came to our city to further his academic career, that action was laden with all the overtones of an act of rebellion, an expression of his rage and resentment against his father; an abandonment of the latter, who claimed that he needed him and clung to him possessively; an assertion of independence from father and family; and a challenge to his own sense of masculinity and personal adequacy and his capacity to master new challenges. As we can conjecture on the basis of this history—and as it turned out in fact—Don was vulnerable on any one and on all of these counts.
