Phobic States
I would like at this point to return to a consideration of the problem of phobias. The interest in phobias is prompted by the general phenomena in the case histories we have been studying of persistent phobias in childhood among these patients. For almost all of these patients childhood phobias form a fairly intense symptomatic aspect of their early experience. In addition the phobic element seems to form a prominent part of the adult pattern of illness. It would be useful at this point to consider the relationship between phobic symptoms and phobic states to the paranoid process. The question also seems to me to be of some utility in concretizing and specifying some of the connections between externalization and projection as such.
