Mother-Infant Relationship
Our discussion of the earliest phases of development and their relationship to the paranoid process has focused on the earliest stages of the parent-child relationship. Our emphasis is on the elements of reciprocal interaction and mutual regulation which govern the parent-child interaction through the full extent of its course, from the earliest moments of neonatal existence through the last stages of the child's separation and individuation of himself from his parents.
In the very beginning the entire interaction is dominated by the quasiautomatic correlation between the infant and the mother's caring responsiveness. The ways in which the maternal ego comes to supplement, support, and nourish the child's latent ego and provide the context which enables it to grow have been matters of considerable study and argument. As we shall see, and as we have seen in all of the cases we have been considering in this study, one cannot underestimate the child's contribution to the emerging pattern of interaction. But for the moment we are content to focus our attention on the parental contribution.
